Empowering Students in Math
Students in this Grade 2/3 classroom see math happening everywhere. They have embraced problem solving through inquiry. They tackle authentic and meaningful tasks. These tasks encourage risk taking, developing community and building student confidence. Technology, coding and robotics connect students to the real world. Students are empowered to attempt difficult problems and deal with their misconceptions as a natural way to own ideas and refine thinking. Class reflection time offers an opportunity for students and teacher to connect, to communicate understandings and solutions and to support one another. Reflection is not only for students to share what they know but also is a time for students to generate new ideas that will lead them to next steps. These students, in a warm and open manner, show us that they are the real stars of learning.
